Google I/O 2011, Day 2

I'm catching up on my Google I/O news for today.  Here's what I found to be interesting:

  • Google demoed Chrome getting 25 fps on the Mozilla WebGL fish tank with 10,000 fish. This is cool simply because it means really impressive games will soon be available in a web browser. Like...
  • A WebGL version of Angry Birds now available for free in the Chrome app store.  Here's a little hack to unlock the levels.
  • The biggest new will probably turn out the to be Chromebook.

Chromebooks are essentially netbooks that run the new Chrome operating system, a browser base environment.  This computer is meant to be run online at all times.  Google is working on a version of Google Docs that will work while not on the Internet.  This kind of computer should meet the needs of many people.  The cheapest model is around $350.

Note that as of today, Microsoft has 89% desktop market share. Check back in a couple years, we're in for a big change.

  1. I'm afraid I think the $350 price point is a little high. I have a CR-48, and while I really like the platform, I think $250 is a more realistic price for what you get. The two models introduced vary a little, with one of the models having HDMI out, but little else that would justify a price approaching $400. I think people will stick with windows based netbooks at that price. After I have a first-hand look at these things maybe I'll change my mind. The photos look nice, but could be deceiving.
